The Summersville Christmas Store (SCS) is a non-denominational, non-profit community organization that serves low-income families during the Christmas season in Summersville and outlying Nicholas County areas.
The Summersville Christmas store serves families in the following areas: Belva, Dixie, Enon, Birch River, Glade Creek, Mt. Nebo, Mt. Lookout, Kesslers Cross Lanes, Swiss, Canvas, Gilboa, and Summersville.
Volunteers shop and set up an actual store with items in groups by age. Low-income-level families that qualify are invited to attend this event, where parents can select $60-$65 worth of new toys for each child in the family. Children can choose a gift for each parent/guardian valued at $15 per parent/guardian living in the household. Our volunteer wrappers wrap each gift chosen to save the families from additional expenses.
Santa and Mrs. Claus are present at the Store, and each child receives a bag of candy. Each family is also given a tin of Christmas cookies and, if funds allow, a food bag containing nonperishable easy meals.
During the 2023 Summersville Christmas Store, 125 families were served. Our ability to continue helping these families is not just dependent but empowered by the donations we receive from grants and individual contributions. No matter how small, every donation is a vital part of our collective effort to make a difference.
Volunteers do not just run the store; their dedication and compassion power it. Held at the Summersville Arena & Conference Center in early December, the work of these volunteers begins on September 1. It ends on December 31 each year, making a significant difference in the lives of those we serve.
